BANARAS ARTISIAN AND WEAVER WALK
PIck up point: Guide will meet you at your hotel in Varanasi. Transport arrangements will be your own.

We begin with a visit to weavers, hard at work on their traditional handlooms, and give an overview of the history of the silk trade and how zari, the metaled thread of Banaras sari patterns & designs, characterised the Banarasi sari. You will see the beautiful detail work done by hand in the homes of local artisans. As we walk through the alleys of the weavers you will notice a sharp contrast of styles between the Muslim & Hindu communities, but also hear how they have interacted and worked together for centuries in both business & pleasure. After passing though the weavers lanes you will end up strolling down Dal Mandi, the Lentil Market, formerly the Tawaif mohalla, or courtesans neighbourhood, hearing folktales of the citys elite relating to the high culture of music and dance in Varanasi. The walk ends at the classical tabla drum makers & historic wholesale silk market.

An ancient and deeply sacred city, Varanasi rests along the banks of the holy River Ganges and encompasses a wealth of beautiful riverside temples, stately old forts and vibrant markets. It's considered the spiritual capital of Hinduism, and it's widely believed that dying here will bring salvation. As a result, the city is home to a multitude of ghats - stone steps leading to the river - some of which are used for bathing rituals and others as cremation sites. An early morning boat ride along the Ganges offers an excellent way to take in the ghats and the bustling activity centered on them.
